ne of my short-term goals for film watching is to see all 80+ films that have won the Oscar for Best Picture. As a related long-term goal, I want to see all the films nominated by the Academy. I'm over half-way there on the former and I'm not really sure where I am on the latter. With my fondness for lists, not to mention the need for a handy reference, I thought I'd make one for both of these tasks. I don't have the time or inclination at the moment to type all of the films nominated, as the list will be rather cumbersome I'm sure. The films that won is a relatively brief list, though, and I thought it'd be a fun meme. So here it is, the super simple Best Picture Oscar meme.

1. Below is a list of the films that have won the Oscar for Best Picture since 1927.

I'm surprised you haven't seen All Quiet On The Western Front.

I have seen the 1979 TV-movie remake with Richard Thomas and Ernest Borgnine, but no, I haven't seen the original yet. I'm working through them at a rate of about 2 per month. In the past couple of months, I've seen Kramer vs. Kramer, Terms of Endearment, The Apartment and Olivier's Hamlet, all of which I'd never seen. I also rewatched The Deer Hunter, recently, having not seen it in about twenty years.

Agreed. Actually, that was on one of the old movie channels just last month. The beginning was a little rough to get through, but if you can get through that, you'll be fine. *read the book in HS*

Great idea. I've wanted to watch all the Oscar-winning movies, too. Your list is going in my memories.

And it's a reasonable thing to accomplish, too. Most people have probably already seen a good deal of the ones that have been released in their teen/adult lives so it's mostly a matter of going backwards. In my case, I had already seen almost all of the Best Pictures from '81 forward and about 70-80% of the '70s films. With a modest goal of watching say, one per week, most people could knock out the list in a year or two.

What on earth were you doing on weekends as an adolescent? I saw so many of the older films then! Dude, you've never seen "Gone with the Wind"? What kind of American are you? It's just shocking. Some of these are going to be a huge treat (Rebecca, A Man for All Seasons, Oliver!, Ordinary People, West Side Story) some a grave disappointment (Crash, The English Patient, No Country for Old Men, most of the old ones). See these with welfy: Marty, How Green was my Valley (sigh), Gigi.

I had no taste for older films as a kid. I actually tried to watch Gone With the Wind as an adolescent but was bored to tears. I'm looking forward to Rebecca for sure, since that will coincide with one of my other goals, seeing all of Hitchcock's movies. I'm currently 40/62 on that list, mostly all pre-Shadow Of A Doubt films.

It's funny, I think I've seen The English Patient but I can't remember for sure or if I'm confusing it in my head with something else, so I didn't list it. Alternately, I've only "technically" see Chariots Of Fire. I was 11 and they showed it at school. And I remember absolutely nothing about the movie, so I'll probably rewatch it at some point. I'll probably also re-watch the Godfather movies, not only because they're great, but also because I've never seen the third one.

Why the sigh for How Green Was My Valley? A bone of contention over it beating Citizen Kane and The Maltese Falcon both that year? Or something else?

Sigh because it is a sappy delight! You and Welf will love it, I'm sure, and be a tiny bit embarassed. Why don't they have years like that anymore, anyway?

what the heck, the movie from 1968 was the lion IN winter.

but i do enjoy conceptualizing the lion winter.

Fixed! Actualy, I just watched that a few weeks ago, so I marked it as such as well.

i hope it was wonderful. the 2003 patrick stewart version is easily one of my all-time favorite movies.
