i'm ready for my close up mr demille

I lost my soul to the look in your eyes

Location: Texarkana, Arkansas

Dispatch got us a load this morning off-account.  We were to pick up a Pepboys load in Indianapolis and take it to... Texas! Weeee doggies.  I've only ever been to Texas once, when I had the 72 oz. steak challenge at the Big Texan in Amarillo, up in the pan handle.  This will be my first trip deep in the... heart... of.. oh Jesus.  Mesquite, TX to be precise, just east of Dallas.  So I slept all day and got up about 5pm.  I watched Farenheit 9/11 to pass the time while Mike finished up his driving shift.  Fitting, considering my destination.  While I was expecting it to be super-left leaning as one would expect from Michael Moore, it wasn't nearly as bad as I had anticipated it being.  In his books, he tends to be a lot more self-righteous and condescending, but the film was much more even handed.  I presume this was an attempt to not preach to the choir and reach some new people who might've been persuaded in the last election.  At least he understands that being a zealot, regardless of the particular snake oil you hawk, turns the average person off.  Overall, a nice job.  I have Bowling For Columbine in my Netflix queue and look forward to seeing it as well.

I'm becoming addicted to photography.  Methinks I will even begin "studying" it in a casual, haphazard fashion.  So I jumped on the bandwagon and became a member at Deviant Art, as a couple of folks on my f-list seem to enjoy it.  For starters, I submitted three photos that that you've all seen around here: one of the shoe tree and two from my most recent trip to NYC that I liked an awful lot.

As if I didn't have a hard enough time keeping up with Livejournal... but if any of the rest of you happen to be on Deviant Art and I'm not aware of it... lemme know.

this shoe tree thing is getting out of hand

Location: still in Texarkana

Oh shit, the Canadians found me

According to my traffic logs, the shoe tree is still getting lots of hits from Livejournal peeps, too.  While I'm flattered that the strength of the photos and writing are circulating in the blog world, it is causing some undue strain.  Since midnight, I've gotten nearly 10,000 hits with the found_objects entry I made listed as the referring page. We're talking 1.3 gigs in 8 hours!  Of course, this only represents about 1500 actual visits, as there are seven pictures which comprise the entry.  This presents a problem since there are still 27 days and 16 hours left to go in this month and I only have 6G of bandwidth alloted for my use each month.  At least it's not a leap year. I really want to keep the photos up, since I'm a big ol' whore, but at the same time...  ya know, I'm a cheapskate.  I'd have to pay for the extra bandwidth to do that.

Of course, it's already starting to taper off.  Something, like, 8500 of those hits were in a four hour period and the worst seems to be over.  But...  how long 'til it's in another blog?  If anyone has some bandwidth to spare where I could move the pictures to and relink the entry, that'd be cool... if not, I may give some consideration to re-linking them to some lower quality versions of those photos.  The seven photos that comprise the entry are in excess of 100k each.

So let's see; about 1500 hits today, plus roughly 1000 hits in January after the re-link when Photobucket croaked on me, and if I had to hazard a guess, given I exceeded their 2G bandwidth that I probably had another 2000 or so hits to that.  That's.... a buttload of visitors!

Of course, this has me to thinking.  Strong writing, with good photos...  maybe I should start a nice little site of some sort with Google Ads and what-not on it.... try and write one really nice article on a bi-weekly/monthly basis and float it out into the blog universe.  Perhaps build a readership of folks, or at the very least, link-blogs with RSS feeds. I've always been really anti-commerical when it comes to my own web presence, but this might be worth pursuing: it would afford me the chance to finally do something with that parchment from the university that claims I have a degree in English.  And I do have a unique opportunity given my current vocation, one which permits to see and do things on a regular basis that a lot of people may never have the opportunity to witness.

I think I might be on to something here.
