A LOT of these songs have been covered many, many times. In the interest of brevity, I've only mentioned the original or most famous recording. I felt justified in giving two Bob Seger songs since I figured an entire generation was re-exposed to "Turn the Page" recently by Metallica. There were also 2 Rolling Stones songs, one was a hit, the other was an "album song". There were five of what I considered to be "album songs": #2, #7 #12, #15, and #18, which would probably not be known with only a cursory knowledge of the artist. Every decade was represented back to the 1950's and the genres included rap, country & western, classic rock, alternative, punk, psyche, folk, and rockabilly. In other words, I tried to include something for everyone. Hope you had fun.

1. Bob Seger and the Silver Bullet Band - "Fire Down Below" (Correct Answers: 4)
It happens out in Vegas, it happens in Moline.
On the blue-blood streets of Boston, up in Berkley and out in Queens.

Somewhere the's somebody ain't treatin' somebody right

2. The Dead Milkmen - "Stuart" (Correct Answers: 5)
POW! He was decapitated!
They found his head over by the snow cone concession

And there's a pamphlet in there from Pueblo, Colorado
And it's addressed to Bill, Jr. and it's entitled, Do You You Know What The Queers Are Doing To The Soil?"

3. Ram Jam - "Black Betty" (Correct Answers: 14)

GODDAMMIT! I knew most of these songs! I even typed in "Nebraska" by Bruce Springsteen in round 2 and then said "nah, it can't be it. I don't want soopageek to think I'm a retard"

I'm a retard.

I hope you do this again, because even though I felt like an idiot, it was great fun.

When I did this game the first time around a couple of years ago, I would do 50 songs at a time and tried to run it on a much quicker time scale: like having rounds every 2-3 days and it wore me out. All the tallying of scores, etc.

With only 25 songs and spreading the game over a month is much more manageable, so maybe I'll do some more - but I doubt every month. Maybe every other month.

I think it is a fun game, more than most lyrics games which rely on you just knowing the song. In this case, while there may be a few obscure ones, they're mostly songs that you DO know, which is what makes it fun, and maddening. ;-)

Gak! I can't believe I couldn't get 6,18, and 20. Even if I had figured out 18, I would have said Leon Redbone instead of Van Halen. ;)

I've always assumed that "Big Bad Bill" was a cover but I never had enough desire to actually look it up.

I was mildly surprised that more people didn't get "Honky Tonk Women". I guess it wasn't a line that produced instant recognition for a lot of people, so don't feel bad.

I think I'd have gotten "Mississippi Queen" in Round One just from seeing "Vicksburg". ;-)

I can't believe I missed Big Bad Bill. There's also a John Prine bootleg I've got somewhere.

Hell, I didn't get any of them until round 3...then the ones I got were glaringly obvious. I actually hadn't heard several of these songs so I don't feel too bad about it.

"Travellin' Band" grrrrrrrrrrrr...
"Ode To Billie Joe" grrrrrrrrrrr...
"Folsom Prison Blues" arrrggggghhhhhhh.....

I kept waiting for you to get "Travellin' Band". I thought for sure you'd get it after the addition of "midnight" to the lyric.

You gonna do another one? If you do, I'll advertise and link-to from my journal if you don't mind. I've got my pretty little head scheming another themed one, but I need a break from it or I'll burn-out on it again. Maybe for December. :)

Thanks brother, do rub it in. Just reflect kindly on my "To The Kill" victory, if you wouldn't mind.

I don't know about doing another one. I have song ideas, but I ended up talking to myself and yourself on the last one.

Stuart?!? how did I miss Stuart?!?

Not to mention #4, which the manbeast has played daily for the last several weeks.

Or the Stones, or Tangled up in Blue.

Anyway, it's a fun game ... I hope you'll do it again when you've got time :)

you're not like the other people here in the trailer park

Back in college when that album came out, some friends and I were fond of asking people "Do you know what a burrow owl is?" and then launching into the whole "Jumping Jesus on a pogo stick" tirade when they didn't.

I can still recite the entire song from memory. Heh.

Re: you're not like the other people here in the trailer park

I always thought it was a Burl Owl. I picutred a cute little owl living in the burl of a tree. Now that I know it's a Burrow Owl, well, I'm going to have to adjust my entire worldview.

now Stuart, do ya think a kid like that is going to know what the queers are doing to the soil?

JUMP'n JEEsus on a POGO STICK!!! EVERYBODY knows that a burrow owl lives in a HOLE... in the GROUND... WHY THE HELL YOU THINK THEY CALL IT A BURROW OWL, ANYWAY!?!?!?!

Holy shit stranger. Long time no see. How the hell you been?

Awww I should have known #11 I love that song.
