I have tried really really hard to like Mates of State, not because they are so adored by legions of indie kids but because I actually heard of them independently one afternoon while driving home from work about three years. Some song was playing on the radio and it was attributed to Mates of State. At the time, my usual music cohorts were ignorant of them. Their star was just then on the rise and hadn't quite yet "hit" yet. Patiently I waited about six months until I was able to finally track this song down. It was on their first album My Solo Poject. I didn't realize that ALL of their music was going to be that cheesy organ and drums. AMG calls their first album "passionate, accessible pop/rock". Yeah, maybe if you ride carousels because you like</s> the music.
Needless to say, I was disappointed. I have been mystified by their subsequent rise to darling status over the past three years, yet, being open minded, decided to continue giving them a chance. Our Constant Concern? More of the same. This year's Team Boo was going to be it, I thought. The Mates of State conundrum would unfold in my ears and I would be enlightened and groove with the indie masses in harmony. I couldn't even get through the entire album without turning it off in disgust. I have officially given up. You kids can have this mess.
