yshaloo I've learened of a Japanese ghost town that is an island. It grew during a coal-rush; coal was mined out of the reef and the island extended in size over the years by landfill from the mining processes. When the mines dried up, the island was deserted. Here is a website with a little textual background and some amazing photos of Gunkanjima. What's neat about it is that it was a miniature, modern city with high-rise dormitories and apartment buildings - it was fully inhabited with a peak population of 5300 until 1974. If these kinda things tickle your fancy, check it out.
