Petals Around the Rose
i'm ready for my close up mr demille
I had a fun time catching up on (some limited) journals. Obviously there's no way I could catch up on everyone's, so I read through about a dozen or so that I like keeping up with and the rest I'll just hafta dig back in and keep caught up. With the CD-burn project over and the Beastie Boys thingie nearing completion (which, I'm sure you guys will be thrilled when I stop yammering about that all the time) I plan to be a good little livejournaler and keep caught up.

Some fun things

This can be frustrating. But once you figure it out, you're like... duh.

It took me about 15 minutes. Presumably, the longer it takes you the smarter you are. The webpage states that some college professor spent a year figuring it out. I think the webpage was just trying to rationalize why a college professor would take a year to figure it out. That's probably bullshit, though. If you play, tell how long it took you, but don't leave any spoilers in my comments. Or at least tell me how long before you started cursing and stopped out of frustration. I nearly did, but I went out on the porch and smoked a cigarette then sat down in front of the computer again and had it in about 30 seconds.

And some fun quiz/meme/crap thingies....

soopageek's LJ stalker is janiev!
janiev is stalking you because you got better results for the 'acronym' thing than them. They are also slowly poisoning you!

...of these slanderous lies... I must say, the second one is pretty damn funny.

atthestarz and pharminatrix used to live together but pharminatrix moved out when they saw atthestarz making out with merlinmann!
sinatra has secret, sordid fantasies about ruxxell!
aussieintn and pharminatrix took twenty minutes to decide what to tell the paramedics and the RSPCA.
futuregirl got brooke3rdstreet drunk and naked, and took photos. trega downloaded them.
zentropa has a secret fixation with butter!
jeananne had better clear their internet cache before hazlewood comes home.

I'm an idiot. Figured it out on my first try.

Well see, I don't buy the whole thing of it being some indication of how smart a person is by how long or short it takes to solve it, to me it has more to do with how you see the world, especially how you interpret data you're given and then process it.

Interestingly enough, if there were two people on my flist who I would guess would get it quickly, I would probably have guessd you two. Don't take that the wrong way, it's not meant to be some sort of sleight. While I don't really know either of you in any meaningful way, I have gleaned some inkling of your mental mechanisms from your journal entries. That silly exercise is as much about language and conceptualization as it is about problem solving. I think the people who find it comes naturally to them are people who also find using language to describe their world as natural as breathing.

See, I tend to think of myself as mathmatical and analytical ... I'm certainly organisationally flexible ... and tend to have less verbal facility than I'd like to ... very interesting.

i gave the petals/rose thing to about ten different friends both here and IRL... all but one or two gave up within fifteen minutes. so i might have REALLY smart friends, but i'll never know! meanwhile, i'm dumb because it took me five.

i'd hoped that lj stalker thing worked based on # of recent comments in the journal or something, but it turns out it just randomly picks from your friends list :(

I don't think that rose petals game has anything to do with intelligence at all. See a previous comment I left for fairymelusine and delicarose here.

About quizzes. I find most of them to be dumb and random, for me the fun is the brilliance of the general premise or the inspired nature of the outcomes.

Wait, you can get the correct result, every time you roll, and don't know what the solution is?

(Deleted comment)
But that would be cheating! You're supposed to roll it until you figure it out :)

So, are you all healed up now?

Not quite. I'm walking around on the leg, but it's still generally stiff and sore. I have a somewhat pronounced limp at the moment. I go back to the doctor on the 21st and a determination will be made if I'm healed enough for work.
